MDT was successfully and routinely performed by thousands of physicians from the year 1930s to 1940s before the widespread availability of antibiotics.
In the 1990s, antimicrobial resistance towards antibiotics used in the treatment of diabetic wounds and foot ulcers was increasingly common thus revitalizing a new demand for more effective treatment using MDT.
The US Food and Drug Administration approved MDT as a prescription treatment in 2014 and in some EU countries it is classified as Medical Devices.
