In the 1990s, antimicrobial resistance towards antibiotics used in the treatment of diabetic wounds and foot ulcers was increasingly common thus revitalizing a new demand for more effective treatment using MDT.
The US Food and Drug Administration approved MDT as a prescription treatment in 2014 and in some EU countries it is classified as Medical Devices.
